Review [The Old Man And The Sea]

[The Old Man And The Sea] by Ernest M. Hemingway, YBM Si-sa, 2005.


어니스트 헤밍웨이는 [노인과 바다]의 주인공인 노인의 입을 통해서 '희망을 버리는 것이 죄라고 말한다. "It is silly not to hope, he thought. Besides I believe it is a sin." (p.136) 죄에 대한 그의 생각이 맞다고 본다.

예로 자살을 들 수 있을 것 같다. 희망에 마음이 부플어 설레이는 사람은 스스로 죽지 않는다. 자살을 생각하거나 시도한 이들은 모두가 한결같이 희망을 잃은 사람들이라고 말 할 수 있다.

이 책의 설정도 희망을 잃지 않는 것에 일맥상통하는 것 같다. 84일 동안 한 마리의 고기도 낚지 못한 한 늙은 어부는 희망을 포기할 수 도 있는 충분한 배경 가운데 끝까지 포기하지 않아 마지막 3일간의 사투 끝에 대어를 잡았으나 또 다시 돌아오는 길에 상어떼를 만나 결국 고기의 뼈만 이끌고와 실망할 법도 하지만, 그 노인은 잠을 자면서 사자꿈을 꾼다는 것으로 다시 희망을 놓지 않은 듯한 암시로 이 책이 끝나는 것에서 그런 느낌을 받았다.

그런데 내가 받은 책의 메세지와는 다르게 헤밍웨이는 권총자살로 그의 생을 마친 것이 아이러니하게 다가온다. (2007.5.2)

Ernest Hemingway says that it is sin to give up hope, through the mouth of the main character of his book [The Old Man And The Sea]. "It is silly not to hope, he thought. Besides I believe it is a sin." (p.136) I agree with him

Let’s think about the issue of suicide. One with hope never kills oneself. Someone who commits suicide must think he has lost hope.The book seems to teach not to give up hope. The old man doesn't catch any fish for 84 days. He might give up then, but he doesn't. He had to fight with fish in the last three days. At last, he caught a big fish.

However, the joyful time was not long. The fish was eaten by sharks on the way home. He might be hopeless, but he dreamed the dream of a lion, which means a new hope to me.


However it is an irony that Hemingway killed himself after he told us about the hope of life in his book.
